Previously our customers would 'hack' their own instances by going into their code and change the CSS. There was never a straight forward way to customize your own platform. We wanted to answer this as we were updating for the Banyan design system. The product requirements were
1. Ability to change styles
2.Ability to restore to default
3. Ability to 'agree/acknowledge' to a disclaimer that notifies the user that by changing styles, Collibra is not responsible for any WCAG standards compliance issues.
4. Ability to see a preview of the style choices being made.
We created a build your own customization page where customers that have Admin access can apply their logo and brand colors to the UI. With regards to accessibility we are not able to be held liable for when customers colors fail WCAG standards. However, this is a step forward when it comes to letting our users customize their own experience and feel more branded.
I looked at several different theme creators and renditions of what a theme generator could possibly be. From exporting JSON to built in WCAG contrast detectors, for the time allocated we just focused on a simple experience.
I experimented with a few different color backgrounds for the header as a starting point. I chose darker colors for contrast and close to our current theme. During this process the figma update of modes/variables were available which helped with the fidelity of the mockups.

The feature was well received and polled well with our users. Despite having to leave certain features on the cutting room floor, this brings hope that there can be much more to be improved on. From Product Managers and Developers, this has been one of our favorite implementations.
